What is the difference between an 18 kg LPG bottle and a 20 lb LPG tank?

People think the numbers are just regional packaging. Actually, the two are not close in capacity. An 18 kg LPG bottle holds about 39.7 lb of LPG. A 20 lb LPG tank holds about 20 lb of propane, which is roughly 9.1 kg. So an 18 kg bottle is more than twice as heavy in fuel capacity and physically larger.

This caused one of my early mistakes. In 2014, a customer asked for a 20 lb LPG tank. I sent an 18 kg LPG bottle because both were 'small' in my head. The valve connection was different, the cart was too small, and the exchange took three days. That error cost $320 in delivery fees plus a bruised relationship. If you are ordering, do not go by the name. Check the tare weight and the water capacity stamped on the collar, and ask the supplier which connection your appliance needs.

Are fiber cylinder gas options worth switching to?

Fiber cylinder gas usually refers to composite LPG cylinders that use a fiber-reinforced wrap instead of a steel shell. Their big advantage is weight. A 20 lb composite tank can be several pounds lighter than a standard steel tank, which is a big deal for food truck staff or anyone hauling cylinders up stairs.

But I have enough caution flags to say: do not switch just because composite sounds high-tech. In 2024, the composite cylinders we priced cost about two to three times a comparable steel tank. They also have their own inspection requirements and some refill stations will not fill them. Can I store LPG cylinders outside, or do they need a shed?

For most small and medium cylinders, outdoor storage is safer than a shed. An LPG leak needs to disperse. Outdoors, a small leak can dissipate. Inside a shed, basement, or garage, it can pool and reach an ignition source. This applies to 20 lb LPG tanks, 18 kg LPG bottles, and even the little LPG gas canister you use for camping.

Outdoor does not mean careless. In 2019, I stored 18 kg LPG bottles directly on wet concrete for one season. The bottom rings rusted badly enough that 12 bottles had to be taken out of service. Why does my LPG gas canister seem empty faster in winter?

People think the LPG is evaporating or being used up faster. Actually, the gas is still there. The issue is vapor pressure: LPG in a cold container does not vaporize as readily, so the appliance receives less gas vapor and the flame gets smaller. You are not necessarily running out; you are losing pressure.

I once had a customer in January insist their LPG gas canister was leaking because the gauge showed empty after one cold night. We tested it under pressure. No leak. What had changed? The outdoor temperature had dropped thirty degrees. The liquid was still there, but vapor pressure had dropped enough to make the gauge read low. Once the canister warmed up, the gauge recovered and the appliance ran fine.

A real leak is a separate issue: you will usually smell the odorant even outside. If you smell LPG, close the valve, move the canister to a well-ventilated outdoor place if it is safe to handle, and call your supplier. Do not rely on the 'empty in winter' excuse until you have ruled out a leak.

What if I only need one 20 lb LPG tank or one 18 kg LPG bottle?

Honestly, this is the area where I get most frustrated on behalf of small buyers. A lot of sales content assumes you need a pallet of cylinders. But the food truck owner starting out with one 18 kg LPG bottle is a real customer, and the supervisor who needs one 20 lb LPG tank for a new piece of equipment is a real customer.

When I started my side business in 2013, I asked a local supplier about a single used 20 lb tank. They basically ignored me for two weeks. That was a mistake on their part. I still do not buy anything from them. The suppliers who took my small orders seriously are the ones I use now for larger orders. Small does not mean unimportant; it means potential.

What is one thing most people miss before refilling a cylinder?

Most people check the date. That is a good start, but not enough. In 2022, I approved a batch of 20 lb LPG tanks based on requalification dates. The dates were fine. Then I spotted bulges and rust pitting on the bottom rings during the actual changeout. We had to pull 14 tanks from service. The date does not make the metal intact. If you see any of those issues, do not fill it. Take it from someone who paid for the lesson: a $50 cylinder is not worth a $10,000 incident, and the risk to people is worse than the money.

Should I buy my own LP gas cylinder or rent from a supplier?

For 20 lb LPG tanks, buying can make sense if you use them weekly and store them properly. For larger 18 kg LPG bottles, rental or exchange is often better because the supplier handles inspections, valve checks, and hydrostatic testing. I learned this after buying a few extra cylinders to save on rental fees. Then the first reconditioning bill arrived, and my savings disappeared.

In Q3 2024, I ran a simple comparison for a small fleet of 20 lb tanks: owning made sense after about 18 months of heavy weekly use. For seasonal or light use, renting made more sense. Those are not universal numbers, and the market has changed since then—but the logic is still the same. Calculate your actual refill volume, not the 'ease' of having a cylinder on site.
